New Delhi, July 12: Arvind Panagariya, NITI Aayog’s Vice Chairman is likely to replace Raghuram Rajan as next Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor. Government has been looking for a suitable person for the post of RBI Governjor after Raghuram Rajan, whose current three-year tenure ends on September 4, made a surprise announcement last month that he would not seek a second term and would return to academia. Arvind Panagariya is among the top contenders of the top post.
A Ph.D holder from Princeton University, Arvind Panagariya is currently a Professor of Economics at Columbia University. He is a former Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank and Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland at College Park. The 64-year-old economist has also worked for the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, World Trade Organization, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in various capacities.
