After introducing a series of bold reforms, Nagpur University is all set to provide unique identification number (UIN) for each of its over four lakh students. The number would act just like Aadhaar, where any Indian or foreign university or even a recruiter can verify the entire academic record of students.

The data could be accessed through any part of the globe. Those who want to access the data would need to take prior permission from the NU administration and also will have to shell out some money, according to NU officials.

The concept was first mooted by vice chancellor SP Kane after a student almost lost his job when his company had asked NU for his credentials and latter did not have any record of him. “We took a decision during a recent meeting. The task to prepare modalities was once entrusted to the panel headed by pro-VC Pramod Yeole. We plan to start this new facility from commencement of next academic session (2017-18). The panel would be submitting its report within a month or two, after which things would be finalized,” Kane told TOI.

The pro-VC’s panel is constituted to frame modalities to start ‘centralized admission process (CAP)’ for all NU’s graduate and postgraduate courses, excluding professional ones like engineering, pharmacy, law and hotel management.

Through UIN, the companies or universities would be able to verify marks obtained by the students along with their performance in a particular subject and even number of attempts taken to clear the papers. It will also include details of those caught while indulging in malpractices.

There were doubts regarding why the enrolment numbers were not used as UIN, as that, too, is unique for all students, the VC clarified that UIN would be generated even before the students get admissions in colleges. “Those who want to take admission, need to generate UIN by login into NU’s portal. Once UIN is generated, it should be used by the students while seeking admission in any courses. Enrolment number can only be generated once the admission is confirmed. We wanted to avoid any confusion,” he explained.

He added that topmost security would be provided so that the data will not be misused by anyone. “The interested stakeholders need to register with us and explain the purpose for seeking candidates’ information. Only after total verification, they would be provided the password. The aim is to save the students from lot of documentational hassles. Even the students would be able to access their own marks online, in case they lose the marksheet,” he explained.
