Shillong: The Meghalaya Peoples' Committee on Aadhaar will facilitate filing of affidavits to the Supreme Court on various issues related to the unique biometric scheme.

The committee, which had also started the Aadhaar opt-out campaign, would facilitate the filing of affidavits in view of the upcoming hearings in the Supreme Court by a constitutional bench on petitions against Aadhaar from January 17.

under the biometric schemeChief minister Mukul Sangma told the Assembly recently that Aadhaar is not compulsory in Meghalaya and the state schemes and programmes would not be linked to the unique number. However, the enrolment process would continue.

Mukul said the Centre had been giving "conflicting directions" on linking Aadhaar with various schemes which has led to confusion. To clear the air of confusion, he said the state government would seek further clarity from the Centre, and it would request the Centre not to link Aadhaar with central schemes implemented in Meghalaya.

He said till date, around 602,195 citizens in Meghalaya have enrolled for Aadhaar.
