The police have arrested a habitual offender who stole valuables from several houses by diverting attention of residents under the pretext of asking their Aadhaar card details.

Originally, S. Baby (74) of Venkata Nagar, lodged a complaint with the Grand Bazaar Police Station alleging that an unidentified person came to her house and asked for her Aadhaar card.

While verifying the data the accused gained access into the house and took away 38 sovereigns of jewels.

The investigation revealed the involvement of Vijay (30) and D. Ganesh (36) of Vellore district, Tamil Nadu in the case. The suspects were habitual offenders and involved in several similar cases in Tamil Nadu last March. The special police team secured Vijay near his house who confessed to have committed the offence during interrogation along with another accused Ganesh.

Deceptive method
V.J. Chandran, Senior Superintendent of Police said, “The accused confessed to have committed the offences by adopting deceptive methods of targeting the houses, where the aged persons were living alone.

One of them committed the offence while the other person was engaged in diverting the attention of the victim under the pretext of asking details of their “Aadhaar Card.”

Ganesh was at large for the past 7 months. But the special team which tracked his mobile phones which were changed often and upon the information of the informants camped continuously in and around Vellore district and tracked Ganesh. Finally the special team arrested him on Tuesday.

Based on the confession, 40 sovereigns of gold jewels worth about Rs. 10.lakh which were stolen in Puducherry were recovered.

Facing trial in 13 cases
The accused persons are facing trial in 13 cases registered against him in various police stations of Tamil Nadu.
