MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has recently ordered the state government to file a report on how the government school teachers would be involved in Aadhaar card-National Population Register (NPR) data linking project.
In his petition, C Balachandar of Tamil Nadu Primary Teachers Association said that the primary school teachers, who already run short of time to complete the classes for this academic year due to floods, have been involved in the central government project.

The state government has decided to involve only the primary school teachers in the project for which a special training was given to them, said the petitioner.

When the case came up for hearing last Friday, T Lajapathi Roy appearing for the petitioner said as per section 27 of the Right to Education Act, the government school teachers should not be roped in for non-educational purposes other than works related to the decennial population census, disasters and elections. Even the Supreme Court has ruled that the Aadhar card was not mandatory and so the court should stop the state from utilising the services of the primary school teachers in the project, he argued.
A division bench of Justices V Ramasubramanian and N Kirubakaran asked the government to submit a report on the role of the teachers in executing the project.
