A total of 83.48 per cent of the total population in Tamilnadu were given Aadhaar cards under the National Population Register-Biometric Enumeration (NPR-BME) scheme, Revenue Minister R B Udhayakumar told the State Assembly today.
Moving the demand for grants for his department, he said capturing of photographs, finger prints and iris images (biometrics) of the residents aged five years and above under the NPR-BME scheme was taken up in the state in a phased manner.
The work was being executed by Bharat Electronics Limited under the aegis of Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India with the active involvement of Revenue authorities.
''Of the total 7.21 crore population of Tamil Nadu as per census 2011, the targetted population is only 6,74,18,169 (five years and above)'', he said.
''As on July 31 this year, 5,62,83,959 persons have been enumerated and 5,26,47,075 Aadhaar cards have been generated'', Udhayakumar said, adding, in terms of percentage of the targetted population, 83.48 per cent have been covered under NPR-BME.
