DCB bank becomes first to offer Aadhaar-based ATMs: Interesting facts on Aadhaar

Aadhaar-based transactions without PIN

The DCB bank has become the first of its kind to start Aadhaar-based ATM usage facilities wherein a customer can transact using his Aadhaar card details. According to the bank's managing director and chief executive, Murali Natrajan:
  • The user can put-in the 12 digit Aadhaar number or swipe the card at an ATM to start the transaction
  • At the stage of confirming the identity, rather than PIN, it requires biometric details
  • To authenticate the identity, a customer has to just put his finger on the scanner
  • Only DCB customers will be able to use the facility
  • The bank currently has 400 ATMs and it has been planning to cover the entire network under this system.
What is Aadhaar card?

  • Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identity number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) on behalf of the Government of India to individuals for the purpose of establishing the unique identity of every single person
  • Aadhaar number does need to be changed or renewed and will be valid for the full life of an individual
  • It serves as a proof of identity and address anywhere in India.

  • For opening a bank account
  • Applying for passports
  • Booking e-tickets
  • At places where there's a need to establish identity

  • Since Indian citizens never had any nationally accepted unique identity for identification, people have always used driving licence, PAN cards, ration cards, passport etc
  • Nonexistence of easily verifiable identities have always led the elimination of genuine recipients such as poor

  • It also enables secure delivery of payments and access to government services.
